Look, we all know that the monthly theme reading challenge I tried to implement in 2025 was a huge bust. I wouldnât blame you if you didnât know that was something I tried.
I think itâs safe to say that I like to experiment with different things and see how they play out.
Iâm usually failing at things. (And thatâs ok!)
In the spirit of experimentation, Iâd like to try a different kind of reading challenge in 2026. There are 12 definite prompts, plus one âbonusâ prompt, if that makes sense.Â
Rules

These are the rules Iâm setting for myself, youâre welcome to adjust these rules to suit your needs.
- This challenge runs from January 01, 2026 to December 31, 2026.
- I canât buy a new book to complete this challenge. Books I already own or library books ONLY.
- Read own voices when possible.Â
- I can’t use the same book for more than one prompt.
- Avoid books by cis dudes when possible.
The Prompts
- A book published the year you were born.
- A self-published book by a trans or nonbinary author.
- A book featuring a cult.
- A book in a genre you donât normally read.
- The next book in a series you already started.
- A book in translation by a woman author.
- A book that combines food and identity.
- A graphic memoir.
- A dark academia novel by a BIPOC author.
- A book by an author with a disability.
- A novel featuring a protagonist over 40.
- A novel about found family by an LGBTQIA+ author.
- Reread a favorite. (BONUS)
Want to join me?
As I indicated above, you are welcome to join this challenge if you feel so inclined. If youâre on Storygraph, I have a public challenge live now. Iâm surprised by the number of people who happened upon my challenge on Storygraph and decided to sign up (I wasnât expecting that!)
Additionally, I hope to send some suggested reading for each of these prompts on a monthly basisâŚwhere possible, of course (obviously, I can’t suggest books published the year you were born without knowing the year you were born, nor do I know what your favorite book is).
If youâd like to receive my newsletter, youâre welcome to sign up. No worries if not.
Got something to say?
I had to close comments on Bookish Bitch because I haven't been able to prevent an overwhelming amount of spam. If you'd like to dicuss this post, please head over to my Discord or reach out on social media. Thanks for understanding.
